During my visit to Yellowstone National Park in August, I struggled to spot elk. I was taken aback by the scarcity of wildlife as I explored the park by car and on foot. It felt as though the animals were on vacation during my stay. So, when I encountered this female elk in the grass, I quickly took the opportunity to photograph her. She was walking with her young, and just then, she lifted her head above the grass, giving me the chance to capture her curious sideways glance.

Photography can often come down to luck. I found myself many feet away from the elk in a challenging position when I noticed her moving through the grass. I wanted to photograph the full-bodied female elk alongside her young. Yet, her movements and awareness of me kept her concealed in the grass. Fortunately, I managed to capture a moment of her peering over the grass—one of those serendipitous instances.

As I continue photographing wildlife, I discover new things daily. No matter how much experience I gain or how well I grasp the technical aspects of photography, what truly matters is understanding the behavior of the environment around me. Much of this understanding comes from being present in the moment, like this encounter with elk. Anticipating unexpected behavior is crucial for success, along with a bit of luck. Sometimes, despite my efforts to comprehend the animals' movements I wish to capture, they still manage to surprise me, causing me to miss the shot. However, if I remain persistent and patient, I'm fortunate enough to eventually capture a shot I like and want to share.

"Elk in the Grass" is one of those images that, despite not being the sharpest in today's era of high-definition photography, truly conveys the essence of the moment. Capturing an elk attempting to conceal itself while still visible for the ideal shot is a delight. Observing wildlife behavior offers an exhilarating experience. It, however, requires patience, a quiet presence, and observation of the subject's movement, expecting the unexpected.
